Exercise is extremely important for seniors. A body in motion stays in motion so, we tend to want to keep seniors exercising and moving. It is recommended that adults over the age of 65 get at least 30 minutes of exercise per day. This brings us to the question: what can be done to make sure that seniors remain safe while exercising? Paying attention to weather, physical ability, and energy levels is key to ensuring a safe environment and experience for seniors.

Cold Weather: Picking appropriate clothing while choosing to exercise outdoors can prevent seniors from getting sick. Shoes are important as well, preferably non-slip sneakers to promote easy walking and no slips. Be sure that they wear hats, gloves, scarves and other cold weather gear. Be aware of icy patches on sidewalks. While crossing streets, be sure to thoroughly check the surroundings as drivers may struggle more with icy/snowy conditions. In addition, watch where the seniors are stepping in case of any cracks or other fall risks on the sidewalk.

Bicycle Safety: Be sure that a helmet is always worn in the event of any falls. Additional safety measures can be taken by wearing arm and knee pads also. Ensure that seniors are using their bicycles in an area that is smooth and free of obstructions. Aging Adults reflexes are not as sharp as they used to be so, they may be more prone to accidents. If a senior tends to forget what they are doing often, do not allow for long bicycle rides. Simply go up the block a bit and then return home. If a senior wants, they can take multiple bicycles rides. Always be aware of temperature and weather.

Brisk Walking, Jogging/Dancing, Weight Lifting: Before any vigorous exercising, it is very important for seniors to stretch beforehand. This loosens up their joints/muscles and better prevents injury. Appropriate shoes are important as well. Getting enough sleep prior to doing vigorous exercise helps seniors to be alert and aware of what they are doing. Exercises to increase or maintain strength are great for aging adults. Always be aware of limitations to avoid any injuries.

Exercise is a great way to keep seniors healthy and happy. Some form of exercise every day can help their self-esteem and confidence as well. It can be a great addition to their daily routine. Always take extra safety precautions to prevent any injuries.
